From Runway to Real Life
From Runway to Real Life: How to Recreate Designer Looks on a Budget when you learn Pattern Making.
Have you ever dreamed of wearing designer clothing but found the price tags out of reach? What if I told you that you could recreate those runway-worthy looks for a fraction of the cost — and with your own hands? Welcome to the world of pattern making, where creativity meets practicality, and designer fashion becomes accessible to everyone.
What is Pattern Making, and Why Does it Matter?
Pattern making is the art of drafting templates that guide the cutting and construction of fabric into a finished garment. Think of it as the blueprint for your creative vision. While store-bought patterns are a great starting point, they often limit your creativity. With pattern making, you’re in control — you decide the style, fit, and details.
Imagine being able to:
- Copy your favorite designer blouse or dress at a fraction of the price.
- Tailor clothing to your unique measurements for the perfect fit.
- Combine elements from different designs to create something entirely new
Turning Dreams into Reality
I sometimes use commercial patterns but because I know Pattern Making I tweek them to make them my own but mostly I make my own patterns.
Recently, I recreated a $1,500 designer shirt for just $49 and a $400 skirt for $45. The feeling of wearing something that looks expensive but costs a fraction of the price is unbeatable. And the best part? It’s exactly what I wanted — down to every last detail.
About the Shirt
Studied the picture, then I started with the shirt block. The pockets have a pleat down the centre of them with a flap at the top. The Collar is a stand up type the sleeves are a short cap sleeve with a sleeve cuff added to the bottom. All of these skils are taught in the Online Pattern Making course.
About the Skirt
Again I studied the picture, then started with the skirt block. Put a fly zipper doen the centre front. curved pockets, that was the base of the skirt, then i started on paper making the shapes to add to the front of the shirt. Top stitching was used to finish off.
